\emph{Brazilian developments on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling
System} (BRAMS).
metaheur{\'{\i}}stico \emph{Firefiy} (FY) para minimizar a
precipita{\c{c}}{\~a}o do modelo. Neste contexto, as
caracter{\'{\i}}sticas do ver{\~a}o do m{\^e}s de janeiro dos
anos de 2006, 2008 e 2010 foram analisadas. A
aplica{\c{c}}{\~a}o e valida{\c{c}}{\~a}o da metodologia levou
estat{\'{\i}}sticas comumente utilizadas na an{\'a}lise de
dados meteorol{\'o}gicos. Os resultados indicaram que o movimento
vertical em baixos n{\'{\i}}veis {\'e} o principal mecanismo
dispon{\'{\i}}vel para a convec{\c{c}}{\~a}o.
Al{\'e}m disso, o desempenho do modelo
notado.
controle do modelo BRAMS.
Am{\'e}rica do Sul. ABSTRACT: The purpose of this work was
improve the skill of the weather forecasts of the Center for
Weather Forecasts and Climate Studies of the National Institute
for Space Research (CPTEC /INPE), considering an optimization
problem applying the metaheuristic Firefiy algorithm (FY) to
weight an ensemble of rainfall forecasts from daily precipitation
simulations with the Brazilian developments on the Regional
Atmospheric Modeling System (BRAMS) over South America. The summer
characteristics of January 2006,2008 and 2010 were performed using
this model. The method was addressed as a parameter estimation
problem to weight the ensemble of precipitation forecasts carried
out using different options of the convective parameterization
scheme. Ensemble simulations were performed using different
choices of closures, representing different formulations of
dynamic control (the convection modulation by the environment) in
a deep convection scheme. As a result, the precipitation forecasts
can be combined in several ways, generating a numerical
representation of precipitation and atmospheric heating and
moistening rates. The purpose of this study was to generate a set
of weights to compute a best combination of the convective scheme
hypothesis. To minimize the difference between observed data and
forecasted precipitation, the objective function was computed with
the quadratic difference between five simulated precipitation
fields and observations. The application and validation of the
methodology was carried out using daily precipitation fields, de
fined over South America and obtained by merging remote sensing
estimations with rain gauge observations and precipitation field
estimated by the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite.
The quadratic difference between the model and observed data was
used as the objective function to determine the best combination
of the ensemble members to reproduce the observations. Weights
were obtained using the FY and the mass fiuxes of each closure of
the convective scheme were weighted generating a new set of mass
fiuxes. The validation of the methodology was carried out using
classical statistical scores. The results indicated the low-level
omega as the main physical component to weight the ensemble of
closures. The importance of the vertical motion and the role of
the time lag induced in the closure that relates the importance of
the downdrafts to trigger new convective cells were highlighted in
the high weighted parameters associated. The algorithm had
produced the best combination of the weights, resulting in heating
and drying rates more realistically and consequently precipitation
simulations closest to the observations. In addition, a better
skill of the model to simulate meteorological variables was
observed, as temperature near surface and sea level pressure, as
closest to the observation as compared with the ensemble mean
calculation of the control run. However, there were systematic
errors in the low-level wind fields, which are not directly
related to the chosen closure. Better research regarding the
simulation of low level circulation model should be done, due to
the important issue for generating instability in many areas of
South America.",
